The Human and Healthcare Costs of Malnutrition in U.S. Hospitals
When hospitalized patients are malnourished due to not receiving adequate calories, protein and other nutrients needed for tissue maintenance and repair, there can be significant human and healthcare costs.
In the U.S., malnourished inpatients:
- Have up to a five times greater likelihood of mortality and are two times more likely to have an extended hospital stay, and creates an estimated $42 billion burden to the healthcare system
- Are 54 percent more likely to be readmitted within 30 days, which may lead to an additional $17,000 in hospital costs per patient
